Plastic Free Nantwich

Working hard to build on this to help Nantwich reduce its reliance on plastic and reduce the pollution that plastic creates

We are part of the nationwide initiative created by the inspirational Surfers Against Sewage team, who are working hard to find ways to remove and reduce our single-use plastic in Nantwich.

Nantwich was awarded Plastic Free Community status in March 2022 after meeting specific criteria set out by Surfers Against Sewage. We are working hard to build on this to help Nantwich reduce its reliance on plastic and reduce the pollution that plastic creates. Please join us in reducing single use plastic in Nantwich.

Plastic pollution has sadly become synonymous with any coastal or rural activity; from surfing to walking, beach holidays to wildlife watching – it is now an expected part of our experience. This is why plastic pollution and specifically tackling society’s throwaway, excessive or unnecessary plastic culture, has become Surfers Against Sewage’s top priority.

Plastic pollution is an issue which affects all parts of society and is something that we can all take action on, at every level. Indeed, it will only be through concrete, collective, positive action that we can make the change in culture needed to stop to plastic from overwhelming our world.

“It’s all about kicking our addiction to avoidable single-use plastic and changing the system that produces it.”

How are we involved?

Every quarter we hold a litter pick on a Sunday morning. We pick different locations each time to encourage residents from across our community to join us. The great news is that no one needs to bring any kit as the litter grabbers and bags are donated by Ansa.

As well as removing unsightly litter from our parks and wildlife areas, we are also collecting important data on the types of litter that we find (yes we go through each bag and itemise it!) The results of this survey is shared with Surfers Against Sewage to build a national picture of the extent of the problem facing the UK. The data is used to lobby companies to reduce their reliance on plastic and to demonstrate to local and national government to extent of the problem and to encourage them to take action to reverse the harmful effects of our throw away society.
